TOTEM - FACTOTUM
LOST BUT NOT AT SEA
The elements of this piece all belong to the water. The large, formed block echoes the familiar wooden posts on the beach as the tide ebbs and is bound through its centre with an old rope found in a boat yard. The rope secures and makes safe. A rowlock from the river forms a symbolic crown.
DO YOU THINK THEY HAVE SPEEDBOAT RACING IN HEAVEN?
The chainsaw-carved block is pierced by an old door staple. The recent and sudden loss of a close friend and the loss over years of other close friends prompted a question – what are a person’s last thoughts? This is the artist’s random thought, a smile in the midst of tragedy.
FOUR BULLETS AND A BALL AND CHAIN
Carved into the form of an angel the piece has four bullets embedded in its back and one wing weighted down by a ball and chain. The ‘halo’ is formed from an old bottleneck. Restraints and imposed restrictions invite the viewer to consider freedom and earth-bound sublime.
TWO DOLLS
The heart of this piece is a heavily-worked apple tree trunk, forming the upright of a cross with a wooden dowel, which is finished with a symmetrical metal flourish. The base is formed to a hoof shape, suggesting the devil, while the eye lifts to the symbolic angel head. Between these and set into the carved centre is a ceramic baby doll: innocence, good and evil in tension.
DREAMS ARE MADE FOR THIS
The ‘trap’ is beaten into a belly-shaped wooden bowl, above which is a warning sign, strung into a metal ring. This is an industrial ‘dream catcher’, designed to catch the bad dreams, which then fall into the trap.
WAR AND PEACE
Constructed from layers of laminated ply and hard woods this is a totem that is adorned with tribal markings associated with war and peace. The inclusion of found objects brings a level of visual aggression. Is this a totem or something else: a gun, a peace pipe, a spear?
ORGANIC-ORGANIC
The naturally formed and manmade joined together to create a new organic and aesthetically pleasing form.
EVEN THE TOUGHEST NUT CRACKS EVENTUALLY
The surface of this beautiful, soft and smooth ‘humbug’ is run through aggressively by a rusty chain.
IT’S THE TAKE OFFS (NOT THE LANDINGS) THAT REALLY HURT
The dynamic form and upward thrust give this piece its title. The sculpture is strung and bound with rubber cord that gives a feeling of tension to the imagery.
YOU SAW THE WHOLE OF THE MOON
The old scythe is presented on a wooden totem. Many broken friendship bracelets are tied to the scythe. These threaded tokens were once worn by the artist and collected when they ‘fell’. Worn for those we love and are here worn on a scythe, for those who are lost.
THE QUEEN IS DEAD; LONG LIVE THE KING
Queen and King chess pieces are in play, representing a dramatic shift in power between a woman and a man. Each piece is adorned with a lace ruff and topped with symbols of identity and power: for her an ornate handle, for him a cloak fastening bound through with the rib of a roe deer buck.
PULLED OUT ALL THE STOPS
The solid and dense apple heartwood core has five bottle stops inserted into it. This is simply a beautiful display piece.
ARTEMIS AND APOLLO
Artemis and Apollo are twins of Greek mythology; a sister and brother. This piece symbolises that fraternal bond and is a direct response to the loss of a sibling in the family, leaving a twin sister alone. The two elements are made as one and cut into a pair of non-identical mirroring obelisks.
LOVE BAT (FOR WHEN WE FORGET)
Mounted for display, the piece has a pleasing form and balance.
THE GIRL WITH THE SILVER SPOON SMILE
This piece contains an apparently disparate collection of found objects. The ‘smile’ began with the silver teaspoon, unearthed in the shape it retains. The other features are a homage to the identity of the location, brought together and animated in the form of this piece.
KNIGHT IN WOOLLEN PYJAMAS
Made for the (softest) protection of a dear friend and painter who had been ill. The Knight is capped with a woollen helmet and holds an artist’s Maul as if prepared for battle. The ‘arms’ on the shield depict a classical view of a Welsh mountain, which is central to the identity of the painter.
PIPE DREAMS
Sometimes the objects are what the piece is about.
SWINGS BOTH WAYS
The title of this piece expresses the potential arc of movement, swinging from the heavy wheel base. This kinetic curve echoes the circles of the found objects, chosen for aesthetic resonance; joyful juxtaposition in sculpture of what is found together in location.
SOFT JUSTICE
An unusual set of scales, two ‘buckets’ constructed from soft handmade felt are suspended from the hard chrome bumper that forms the bridge. The beautiful fulcrum elevates the balance. A gentle symbol in a rough world.
ALL MY OCEANS IN ONE BOAT
Made from layers of joists from an old brewery and segmented with mahogany from an old table, the ‘hull’ suggests a bee-like form and is further enhanced with a bee sting and a proboscis formed by an old bracket. Handmade felt sails represent the wings and are adorned with the historic symbol of the old inn, The Crown. This piece suggests identity with the natural environment, manmade construction and movement. More importantly it represents the individual experience of all of those together in the identity of the artist.
